Misty Islands
Published in Hardcover by David McKay Co (June, 1969)
Author: Smeeton M
Average review score:

A sword is returned to a vanquished warrior

British Brigadier Miles Smeeton, retired, of British Columbia, and his wife, Beryl, have a yacht, Tzu Hang, in which they have cruised the world.

These are real people, and a real boat, and they have real adventures. I first met them in their book, 'Once is Enough,' wherein they were pitchpoled, rolled over, dismasted and very nearly swamped by a following rogue wave in the 'roaring forties' between Australia and the South American coast, to which they went on a jury rig for repairs.

In this book, the Smeeton's describe how they sailed to Japan to return the Samurai sword of a Japanese officer from whom Smeeton had accepted surrender during the Second World War.

A Samurai sword is an object of almost spiritual reverence to the Japanese, held for generations in a family, and of inestimable value. So, General Smeeton wanted to return it--a matter of honor.

Which he did, successfully, to an overwhelmed and very grateful Japanese gentleman.

The book describes their stay in Japan, and especially a place called Mori, where they wintered their boat, hauling her out, stripping her of her rigging, unstepping her masts, and refinishing her bottom.

The book is replete with details of Japan and its people, the friendships that the Smeetons made, and some misunderstandings resulting from cultural differences, some of which are quite amusing.

This is a book primarily of interest, perhaps, to other cruising sailors, but I think it will also please those with an enduring curiosity about other cultures and places.

If you can get hold of a copy, I think you will enjoy it. I certainly did.

Molokai Island in Time
Published in Hardcover by Beyond Words Publishing (December, 1987)
Author: Richard A. Cooke
Average review score:

Essence of Molokai and Aloha spirit
Having had the opportunity to live on Molokai and experience its beauty and power first hand, this book is the only work that I've seen that captures so much of Molokai's essence. Rik's aloha and connectedness to this land and her people shines through each and every picture. And the words accompanying the pictures are genuine and heartfelt.

So many Molokai people and special places are immortalized in his pictures including slack key guitarist Kelii Mawae, fisherman extraordinaire and noni farmer. I read and gaze at this book over and over and never tire of it. It reconnects me with Molokai.

Enjoy! And if you are interested in ancient history of this powerful place, I suggest 'Tales from the Night Rainbow' by Pali Jae Lee and Koko Willis.

Moments Rightly Placed: An Aleutian Memoir
Published in Paperback by Epicenter Press (April, 1998)
Authors: Ray Hudson and Tricia Brown
Average review score:

A lyrical tribute to the Aleutian Islands
Ray Hudson's memories of Unalaska and its people form a beautiful portrait of a time and place. As a former resident of Unalaska, I highly recommend the book. Although the community can no longer be called a village, the Aleut roots described in Hudson's tale are still there. And his deeply evocative descriptions of the land--one of the most remote and beautiful in the world, I'm convinced--are wonderful. The descriptions of everything from fog to wildflowers to stormy nights are moving and accurate. A definite must to anyone traveling to the Aleutian Islands--and a terrific travelogue for the armchair traveler..

Monhegan, the Artists' Island

Authors: Jane Curtis, Will Curtis, Frank Lieberman, and Carl Little
Average review score:

Beautiful illustrations and narrative.
Informative, poetic, and visually pleasing story of the island and why it captivated so many outstanding artists and inspired such an incredible variety of wonderful expression.

Truly a model for the art of special places: how the place inspires art, and how art gives insight into the place.

Registered Landscape Architect
A beautiful book evoking imagery of a time past that had been very instrumental in inspiring and providing access to America's love and appeciation of nature. In this book we are shown how these roads led us to our collective love of natural beauty in America - literally and metaphorically - in an historically accurate and academic work by the author whose love of these roads in Acadia and of nature's wonders in general are delightfully evident. Music in Bali: A Study in Form and Instrumental Organization in Balinese Orchestral Music
Published in Hardcover by DaCapo Press (June, 1976)
Author: Colin McPhee
Average review score:

Music in Bali
An invaluable resource! "Music in Bali" is an exhaustive study of both major and minor Balinese gamelan traditions. Though written more than forty years ago, no recent books on the subject even come close to the amount of information presented here. McPhee, frequently marginalized and maligned as a composer and ethnomusicologist, succeeded in crafting one of the most complete studies of the music of a non-western culture ever published.

Music of Death and New Creation: Experiences in the World of Balinese Gamelan Beleganjur (Chicago Studies in Ethnomusicology)
Published in Paperback by University of Chicago Press (February, 2000)
Author: Michael B. Bakan
Average review score:

A true literary Gesamtkunstwerk
"Music of Death and New Creation" takes the musical world one step closer to an understanding of the truly fascinating world of Balinese music. Ethnomusicologist Michael Bakan obtains a unique perspective of Balinese Beleganjur. He is able to present this style of music both as a scholar and as a performer. His scholarly documentation of the music combined with the humanstic insight required when writing about such a traditional and musical culture have produced a work which is invaluable to the ethnomusicologist as well as those interested in simply broadening their musical horizons. It is an ethnomusicological Gesamtkunstwerk.
